Most of the conversations I have with business leaders start the same way.
They know cyber risk matters. They know they probably need to do more. What they do not have is clarity about what good looks like, what is proportionate for their organisation, or who to trust for straight answers.
Over time, I realised that gap, between concern and clarity, was the real problem. And it is the reason I set up Fractional Wisdom.
Cyber security has become a noisy place. There is no shortage of tools, opinions, frameworks and warnings, all competing for attention. For many SMEs, that noise quickly turns into uncertainty or fatigue.
Leaders are told they need Cyber Essentials. Or that insurers are asking harder questions. Or that customers now expect evidence of controls. At the same time, they are often presented with solutions that feel oversized, unclear, or driven more by sales targets than business reality.
What I saw, again and again, was not a lack of care, but a lack of confidence. Leaders did not want to ignore cyber risk; they wanted to understand it properly and deal with it sensibly.
Having worked in senior IT and leadership roles, I have seen cyber security from both sides of the table. As something you are responsible for, and as something others try to sell to you.
That experience shaped a strong view. Meaningful cyber advice has to be independent.
Fractional Wisdom was set up on a simple principle. We do not sell tools, MSP services or tied solutions. Our role is not to replace existing IT teams, but to sit alongside them, providing independent oversight, clarity and assurance.
That independence allows for honest conversations, sensible prioritisation and decisions that are grounded in risk and business context rather than fear.
Many SMEs worry that cyber security will become a box ticking exercise, something done to satisfy a framework, an insurer or a customer, without really improving their position.
I believe the opposite should be true.
Done well, cyber security should be proportionate, practical and confidence building. It should help leaders understand their risks, make informed decisions and demonstrate assurance without unnecessary complexity.
Whether the focus is Cyber Essentials, cyber risk, resilience or business continuity, the aim is always the same. Clarity first, then sensible action.
Not every organisation needs a full time cyber lead, but many need access to experience, judgement and independence at the right moments.
The fractional model allows businesses to get that support without the overhead, disruption or commitment of a permanent role. It also aligns closely with how SMEs operate. Pragmatic, focused on outcomes and conscious of value.
Fractional Wisdom exists to fit into that reality, not fight against it.
I set up Fractional Wisdom to offer something deliberately different. Calm, clear cyber advice that helps business leaders understand what matters, what is proportionate and what to do next.
Cyber security does not need to be dramatic to be effective. It needs to be understood, owned and embedded in a way that supports continuity and confidence.
If you are not entirely sure what you need yet, that is completely normal. Many of the organisations I work with start with questions rather than a defined brief.
The important thing is having a place to start, and someone independent to guide the conversation.
That is why Fractional Wisdom exists.
